Short History of Early Comics

Comic books, or the concept, started in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s in the form of newspaper comic strips and other illustrated publications.  There were several humorous publications that came out in the early 1900’s such as Little Nemo, Buster Brown, The Katzenjammer Kids, and Comics Monthly.  Following some of these publications was The Funnies which was published by Dell Publishing starting in 1929.  Shortly after that the first Mickey Mouse #1 was printed by Walt Disney Productions.

In the 1930’s – 1940’s there were also some ‘Underground’ or ‘Dirty Comics’ that were published and were adult related and risque for their time.

In March of 1937 the first real DC comic, Detective Comics #1, was published and would later introduce Batman (Detective Comics #27 – May 1939).

In June of 1938 one the most famous comic in history, Action Comics #1, was released by National Allied Publications and introduced Superman.

Superman really sparked the phenomenon in the early stages of WWII and lead to many other subsequent titles the following years such as Captain America, All-Star Comics, Marvel Comics, Whiz Comics, Wonder Woman, Archie, Pogo, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Amazing Fantasy (Spider-man), ETC
